Shock and Awe

Congrats Mr.Bush - you have done it again. You have been managing to shock and awe the world right from your first victory to your second and beyond.

The religion of hate that you have spread to divide the world is really getting stronger by the day.Your policy of war is indeed helping 'terrorists' brainwash more and more 'innocent' youths into becoming suicide bombers. But am sure that this does not shock and awe you?

Did you (and your ever faithful sidekick Mr. Blair) ever pause to think why four young boys with bright futures turned suicide bombers on7/7? Do you ever take time off from delivering your mundane speeches to think about the hate crimes your policies are resulting in? Well, for your information, the families affected by your policy of hatred are certainly in shock and awe - muslim and non-muslim alike.

The 'crimes' being committed in Abu Gharib,in the Gaza and elsewhere in Iraq are only helping create more jehadis across the world to take revenge. The deep divide among U.S./U.K. non-muslims and muslims that you are creating is only making the world a worse off place to live in - does that shock and awe you?

Do you ever pause to think that a bullet fired always gets re-born-as a return bullet? Or is the philosophy of non-violence too 'shocking' for you?

What shocks and awes me is the mute way in which the international community is watching you break up the world, watching you create an atmosphere of hate...not too mention your double standards in recognizing and fighting terrorism.

Well Mr. Bush - you indeed manage to shock and awe.

The ever-mounting Iraqi death toll is the forgotten cost of the decision to go to war in Iraq. On average, 34 ordinary Iraqis have met violent deaths everyday since may 2003. Our data shows no sector of Iraqi society has escaped. – Iraqi Body Count website.

The irony is that millions of people around the world who are fed on images post-9/11 US or post-7/7 UK turn a blind eye to what is happening in Iraq or Afghanistan or Palestine. And that is because they have somehow decided that the tragedy enfolding in all these places is lesser in magnitude. They probably consciously or unconsciously blame Iraqis, Afghans and Palestinians for their plight. Because they think these people have called the punishment on themselves by allowing such barbaric examples of humanity like Saddam Hussein and the Taliban to rule them. But what they forget is that Frankensteins like Saddam and Mullah Mohammad Omar are creations of the US. And that the “war on terror” can never cease until someone in the US first decides to clean up his own backyard: dismantle the arms industry that owes its existence to low-intensity conflicts around the world, and a covert foreign policy that works ceaselessly to foment them.

Tridib, I agree. A tragedy is a tragedy no matter where it happens. But tragedies in Palestine, Iraq, Kashmir get brushed under the carpet and are accepted with amazing equanimity, as if the world were saying 'well, that's not unexpected'. The world has got too used to lives being lost in these areas. But London, well, that's a different thing (though London has also been bombed by the IRA number of times). I definitely don't mean to say that lives being lost in London is any less sadder -- just that the reasons why it gets more publicity are easy to understand.

It's actually a colonial hangover -- thinking that 'darkie' lives are not as important as white ones. Time after time I am astounded by this -- how differently deaths in the East and the West are viewed and with what degrees of equanimity they are accepted. Maybe both need to pay more attention to the value of human life -- no matter where it is lost.
